Film dispute 'leads to breach of contract' lawsuit

Two firms have filed suits over the distribution rights to Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire.

Questions over the ownership of distribution rights to an award-winning film have resulted in two companies filing lawsuits against each other, including an accusation of breach of contract, a source reveals.

Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company disagree over Sundance winner Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, with each firm dismissing the other's claim, the Hollywood Reporter states.

While Lionsgate asserts the second business has no "right, title or interest" to the movie, it states it has filed in response to threats of litigation made against it.

Bert Fields, who represents Weinstein, tells the news provider an agreement was originally made with his client and the subsequent arrangement was made in breach of contract.

He states: "Behind their backs Cinetic Media tried to make a better deal with Lionsgate. Lionsgate was well aware of the TWC contract but went forward anyway."

At the Sundance Film Festival, Push received the Grand Jury Prize: US Dramatic, the Audience Award presented by Honda: US Dramatic and A Special Jury Prize for Acting.ADNFCR-1729-ID-19011898-ADNFCR
