Term: literal rule

1.

The literal rule is a rule of statutory interpretation. Words that are reasonably able of only having one meaning in the context that they are used, must be given that meaning, whatever the result may be.

Usage: The literal rule applied to the construction of the statute to construe the intention of parliament.
