The respondent in English litigation is the legal person against whom an application or an appeal is made. The person filing an application notice is an applicant, a person bringing an appeal is the appellant; and the person defending the appeal is the respondent.
Usage: The respondent to the appeal argued that the appeal had been lodged out of time.
