mutatis mutandis
1.
Mutatis mutandis is a word used most frequently to indicate that a particular set of principles should be applied to another area law, but with variations to fit into the idiosyncratic features of that other area of law.
For instance, the principles for assessing damages in contract law apply mutatis mutandis to infringement of patent rights.
[Latin: The necessary changes being made].
Usage: There is no reason why similar principles should apply mutatis mutandis to the other area of law.
Related Words: ex officio; ab initio; statutory interpretation.
