Term: sound recording

A sound recording under s 1(1) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 UK is a recording of sounds from which sounds may be reproduced. Also, a recording any part of a literary, dramatic or musical work, from which sounds reproducing the work or part may be produced also qualifies for protection as a sound recording, irrespective of the form in which the recording is made (whether it is digital or analog), or the means by which the sounds are reproduced: s 5A.
Where a recording of a literary, dramatic or musical work takes place, the rights in the sound recording exist separately to those vesting in the literary, dramatic or musical work and performance and recording rights.
A sound track to a film also qualifies for copyright protection a sound recording.
Usage: The recording of the conversations qualified for copyright protection as a sound recording.
