Term: Information Commissioner

The Information Commissioner is responsible for monitoring compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 UK. The Commissioner has power to assess a data controller's activities and is given enforcement powers under the Act which may be initiated upon a request from a data subject or on his own initiative.
The role of the Information Commissioner includes promoting best practice for complying with the Data Protection Act, and does so by issuing guidance notes.
The Information Commissioner was formerly known as the Data Protection Commissioner and Data Protection Registrar.
Usage: The Information Commissioner administers the Data Protection Act 1998 UK.
