Processing of persoanl data encompasses any dealing with personal data, be it obtaining, recording, trnsmitting, holding or carrying out operations on the data. Processing of sensitive personal data requires satisfaction of strict criteria.

All data held by public authorities are classified as personal data under the Data Protection Act 1998 UK.
